Difference Between Vitamin K1 and Vitamin K2 : Vitamin K is a group of fat-soluble vitamins that play essential roles in various physiological processes, particularly blood clotting and bone health. Within this group, two distinct forms stand out: Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and Vitamin K2 (menaquinone). Although both vitamins contribute to blood coagulation and bone health, they have different functions within the body, each contributing uniquely to overall health.

1. Sources:

Vitamin K1: This variant of vitamin K is predominantly present in leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Additionally, it can be found in certain vegetable oils like soybean and canola oil. Vitamin K1 is more prevalent in the Western diet due to the consumption of these vegetables. In a nutshell it is obtained from plant source hence people are generally not deficient in it.

Vitamin K2: -In contrast to Vitamin K1, Vitamin K2 is not as abundant in plant-based sources. It is primarily found in animal-derived products and fermented foods. Rich sources of Vitamin K2 include dairy products like cheese, eggs, and butter, as well as fermented foods like natto, a traditional Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans. But still it is recommended to consume pure animal based products like dairy, eggs, chicken, meat etc to have the best bio available form of Vitamin K2 as this will help to promote bone density

2. Functions:

Vitamin K1: Blood Clotting and Liver Health

The primary function of Vitamin K1 is to facilitate blood clotting along with others like WBC, Platelets, Calcium, Proteins etc. Vitamin K1 is crucial for synthesizing specific proteins that regulate the coagulation process. These proteins ensure the formation of blood clots in response to injuries, preventing excessive bleeding. Additionally, Vitamin K1 contributes to maintaining liver health by supporting the production of proteins that aid detoxification and overall liver function.

Furthermore, Vitamin K2 helps prevent the accumulation of calcium in arteries by activating and inactive protein called M-GLA protein (Matrix-GLA), which can contribute to cardiovascular diseases.so basically Vitamin K2 not only provides the guarantee that calcium will enter bones but also makes sure  that calcium does not enter the vessels or anywhere else and prevents Atherosclerosis and promotes vascular health parallel to bone density.

3. Forms:

Vitamin K1: This form of Vitamin K is mainly stored in the liver and primarily supports blood clotting. Its role in bone health is relatively less significant compared to Vitamin K2.

Vitamin K2: Vitamin K2 is further classified into several subtypes known as menaquinones (MK). These subtypes vary in their side-chain structures and are linked to diverse health benefits. MK-4, for instance, is present in animal-based foods and has a shorter side chain. In contrast, longer-chain menaquinones like MK-7 and MK-9 are found in fermented foods and remain in the body for an extended period, contributing to long-term advantages.

However Vitamin-K is also made by the body in the gut but unfortunately most of it we lose through defecation process in the stool. It will be surprising to many of you that the body makes Vitamin K1 and it is then converted into  Vitamin K2 the activated form and this happens with the help of cholesterol.

Both Vitamin K1 and K2 have distinct health implications:

Vitamin K1: Its primary role lies in promoting proper blood clotting and supporting liver function.
